What is drone coverage for a wedding or event?
A Part 107 pilot films the venue and its grounds from the air, the arrivals, the ceremony site from outside the crowd, group photos from above and the exit. On Astral Pic it is a quoted job, not a package: the pilot who will fly looks at the venue, the date and the hours and names a price.
Who orders it
Couples and their planners. Venues that want aerials of a set-up lawn or marquee. Companies running an outdoor launch, a fun run, a festival day or a car show. Schools and charities for a field day or a ribbon cutting. Anyone who wants the whole site in one frame, which no ground camera can give.
What a typical wedding flight covers
Usually 20 to 40 minutes of flying split across two or three moments: wide shots of the venue before guests arrive, the ceremony site from the side or behind the seating, a slow pull-back or orbit during portraits, and the exit. The pilot works alongside your photographer and videographer and stays outside the crowd.
Who flies it
Every Astral Pic job is flown by a pilot who showed us a current FAA Part 107 certificate, the FAA registration label on their drone and a liability insurance certificate of at least $1 million before they could accept a job. A person checked each one. Pilots who take event work have also told us, on their own word, the over-people category of the aircraft they would fly.
What does drone wedding video cost?
Typical aerial add-on to a wedding: $200 to $500. Stand-alone drone wedding video: $300 to $900. Longer coverage is quoted by the hour or half day. Those ranges come from the Fash drone photography pricing guide and the Drone U drone service cost guide, both as read in October 2026.
On Astral Pic the pilot names the price and you see it before you accept. The platform fee is already inside it.
How the price is built
The pilot names their payout, from $50 to $5,000. Your price is that payout divided by 0.8, rounded up to the next dollar; the difference is the 20% platform fee. Both numbers are printed on every quote.
For example, if the pilot quotes $360, you pay $450 and the platform fee is $90.
What moves the price
Hours on site, and whether you want one flight or two, for example the ceremony and a sunset portrait session. Whether a crowd will be outdoors under the flight, which needs a Category 1, 2 or 4 aircraft broadcasting Remote ID for sustained flight, or a waiver. Evening timing, since night work needs the pilot's extra training and anti-collision lighting. A venue under controlled airspace. Drone U's guide gives event coverage at $150 to $350 an hour and $500 for a half day, which is the range longer bookings tend to fall in. More ranges are in the drone photography pricing guide; the quote rules are on the pricing page.
What does the pilot check before quoting?
Five things: whether the flight would put the aircraft over your guests, which needs an aircraft that meets one of the Category 1 to 4 standards under 14 CFR 107.39, or an FAA waiver, with sustained flight over an outdoor crowd limited to Category 1, 2 or 4 aircraft broadcasting Remote ID; whether the venue and any HOA or park allows it; the airspace and LAANC; the time of day; and the weather on the day. The quote reflects the answers.
Over people
FAA rule 14 CFR 107.39 allows flight over a person only if they are taking part in the flight, are under a covered structure or inside a stationary vehicle, or the aircraft meets one of four weight and impact categories, Category 1 to 4. Sustained flight over an open-air crowd is limited to Category 1, 2 or 4 aircraft broadcasting Remote ID; Category 3 aircraft may not fly over open-air crowds at all. Without such an aircraft or an FAA waiver the pilot keeps the aircraft off non-participants and open-air crowds: the ceremony is filmed from the side or behind the seating, not from overhead. The pilot confirms this before accepting.
Venue permission
The venue's own rules come first, then any HOA covenant or city park permit. The pilot launches from a spot the venue agrees to and needs a clear line of sight to the aircraft at all times. Tell your venue a drone is coming; some ask for the pilot's certificate and insurance, which the pilot can show on the day.
Airspace
Most of Dallas-Fort Worth sits under Class B airspace around DFW and Love Field, or Class D around the smaller fields.Much of any large metro sits under Class B, C or D airspace around its airports. The FAA's LAANC system gives near-real-time authorization at 726 airports (FAA LAANC page, updated September 29, 2026, as read in our October 2026 regulatory notes). Where the facility map ceiling is low the pilot files a further coordination request at least 72 hours ahead. A temporary flight restriction, for example around a stadium on game day, can close the airspace, so the pilot checks the notices that morning.
Time of day
Part 107 flights are daylight by default. Civil twilight and night flying need the pilot's post-April 2021 training and anti-collision lighting visible for three miles (14 CFR 107.29). A sunset exit is possible with the right pilot and aircraft; put the hours in your request so pilots quote for it.
Weather
FAA rules require 3 miles of visibility and clear distance from clouds; our pilots also do not fly in rain, in sustained wind over 20 mph, or under a temporary flight restriction. The pilot decides whether it is safe and legal to fly. The weather policy has the limits in full.
How does booking work?
Choose Event or wedding on the booking page and give the venue, the date, the hours and a day-of coordinator. Verified pilots near the venue send prices; you accept one and we email a Stripe invoice. The pilot calls your coordinator the day before, flies the plan, and the files arrive within 48 hours on your private page.
-
Tell us about the event
Choose Event or wedding, then give the venue name and address, the date, the start and end time, a day-of coordinator and phone, whether the flying is outdoors, indoors or both, whether a crowd will be outdoors, and a short description of what you want.
-
Pilots send prices
Verified pilots whose radius covers the venue, and who have turned on event work, see your request and name a payout with a note. Your price appears next to each bid with the pilot's credential card. There is no fixed response time yet, so book early.
-
Accept one and pay by invoice
Accept a quote and we email a Stripe invoice for your price. The job appears under Your jobs once we have set it up, usually within one business day. A person at Astral Pic confirms the payment, and the pilot does not fly before that.
-
The day, and the files
Your pilot calls your coordinator the day before, checks airspace, weather and flight restrictions that morning, and flies the plan from outside the crowd. Files reach your private page within 48 hours. Approve them, or ask for one round of changes, within 48 hours. Your pilot is paid within 7 days of approval.
Cancel free until 5 pm the day before the event. Cancellation policy.
What we do not do
We do not edit drone clips into your main wedding film. We do not fly indoors unless venue and pilot both agree. We do not guarantee a flight in rain or high wind. If your pilot calls it off for weather or airspace you pay nothing extra; with no second date, email us and a person will arrange a refund.
- No editing into your main film. You receive the aerial clips and stills as plain files; your videographer cuts them in, and the footage license lets them do that.
- No indoor flying by default. Indoors is up to the venue and the pilot, and only if both agree in advance.
- No flight over guests without a rated aircraft or waiver. The pilot plans around the crowd, as described above.
- No weather guarantee. If your pilot calls it off for weather or airspace you pay nothing extra and, under the cancellation and weather policy, you pick a new window within 14 days. A wedding usually has no second date. In practice you email help@astralpic.com and a person arranges a refund instead; that is how we handle it today, not a term written into the policy. Refunds reach your card in 5 to 10 business days.
- No sample gallery yet. We show a delivery on this site only when the customer has ticked the consent box, and we label it as a sample. There are none to show yet.
Questions couples and planners ask
The short version: the aircraft stays off your guests unless it is rated to fly over people, you should book as soon as you have a date and a venue, and your videographer can use every clip. The details are below. For anything specific to your venue, put it in the request and pilots will quote around it.
Can the drone fly over our guests?
Only if the pilot's aircraft meets one of the FAA's Category 1 to 4 standards for flight over people under 14 CFR 107.39, or the pilot holds an FAA waiver; hovering over an outdoor crowd also needs a Category 1, 2 or 4 aircraft broadcasting Remote ID. Otherwise the aircraft stays off non-participants and open-air crowds: the ceremony is filmed from the side or behind the seating, and group shots are taken from above a cleared spot, which is how most wedding aerials are made anyway. Say in your request whether a crowd will be outdoors, and the pilot quotes for it.
How far ahead should we book?
As soon as you know the date and the venue; a month or more is comfortable. Quotes arrive as pilots see your request, and there is no fixed response time yet, so leave room. If the venue is under controlled airspace the pilot may need a further coordination request filed at least 72 hours ahead, and FAA DroneZone requests for airports without LAANC can take weeks, so a last-minute booking there may not be possible. You can cancel free until 5 pm the day before.
Can our videographer use the footage?
Yes. The pilot owns the copyright. Once payment is confirmed and the delivery is approved, the pilot grants you a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, copy, edit and publish the files, which includes handing them to your videographer, photographer or planner to cut into your film. The pilot may show the work in a portfolio. Astral Pic shows a delivery as a sample only when you tick the consent box. The full text is in the footage license.
